Denville, a township in Morris County, New Jersey, was a small community of farms, orchards, and rail-served villages in 1919. The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western line ran through the township, tying residents to Morristown, Dover, and Newark, and many local men worked in nearby factories or on the land. The photograph dates from the year the country was demobilizing after the First World War, when returning servicemen and local guard units were still drilling and holding parades in towns like this one. Only a year earlier, the influenza epidemic of 1918 had closed schools and churches across New Jersey, so a gathering of uniformed men in 1919 would have carried both civic pride and recent grief for many families.
