Camp Merritt, on the Palisades plateau in Bergen County, New Jersey, was built in 1917 as a mobilization and embarkation camp for American troops bound for France. Soldiers passed through on their way to the Hoboken piers on the Hudson, and the camp's tents and barracks sprawled across farmland near Cresskill and Dumont. By 1919 the mission had reversed, and the camp became a major point of return, where units arriving from Europe were processed, examined, and discharged or reassigned. Residents of the surrounding towns watched the place swell with men in uniform and saw the local economy tied to the army's supply and transport needs. For people in northern New Jersey in 1919, the camp stood as a visible reminder of the war's end and the slow work of bringing the army home.
