Camp Dix, in Burlington County, New Jersey, was one of the large Army cantonments built in 1917 and 1918 to train draftees for service in the First World War. Established on former farmland and pine barrens near Wrightstown, the camp grew into a sprawling city of wooden barracks, drill fields, and rail sidings that connected it to the Pennsylvania Railroad line. In 1918 it trained thousands of men each month, many of them recent conscripts from New York and Philadelphia, before they shipped out to France. The installation also drew a steady influx of civilian workers, and the influenza epidemic that swept the country that autumn struck the camp hard, filling its hospital wards and forcing grim burials nearby.
