Camp Dix, near Wrightstown in Burlington County, New Jersey, was a much quieter place in 1920 than it had been during the wartime buildup. After the armistice the Army shrank rapidly, and the camp's barracks and drill fields became a center for discharging soldiers and sending them home. The National Defense Act of 1920 reorganized the country's military, and the post gradually took on a peacetime role in training reserve officers and citizen soldiers. Beyond the fences, Burlington County remained largely rural, with farms, pine woodland, and cranberry bogs that sent their crops to markets in Philadelphia and New York by rail.
