Camp Dix, in the pine barrens of Burlington County, New Jersey, was built in 1917 to train Army units for the First World War, and by 1920 it was becoming known as a place where soldiers had passed through on their way home. After the 1918 armistice, the camp served as a demobilization center, discharging troops and sending them out by rail. A 1920 reunion at the post would have brought former soldiers back to the grounds where they had trained, so for many New Jerseyans the name carried memories of the war years. Outside the camp, the Wrightstown area was largely farmland and scrub woods, and the post's rail connections and sandy acreage would shape its future as a permanent military installation.
