Asbury Park, New Jersey, in 1919 was a seaside resort city on the Atlantic that James A. Bradley had founded in 1871 as a temperance community with strict limits on liquor. Its economy rested on summer visitors who arrived by rail from New York and Philadelphia, filling boardinghouses, hotels, and the boardwalk, while the permanent population stayed far smaller. The Eighteenth Amendment was ratified in January 1919, so the town's long-standing dry tradition was about to become national law. This Library Association photograph records a civic institution serving that year-round community, one that reading-minded residents and summer families alike would have known as part of the town's self-image as a respectable, orderly resort.
