Atlantic City, New Jersey, in 1912 was one of the country's best-known seaside resorts, drawing visitors by rail from Philadelphia and New York to its boardwalk, hotels, and beach. Its economy rested almost entirely on tourism and the hospitality trade that served it, so hotel staff, boardwalk merchants, and rail workers made up much of the working population. The city's convention halls and large hotels made it a common meeting place for trade groups, and a photographers' association gathering there would have fit that pattern. Philadelphia photographer William Herman Rau, who made many panoramic group portraits, recorded such assemblies by arranging members in wide rows for a single exposure. For the people in the picture, Atlantic City was a place of business as well as a summer destination.
