Atlantic City in 1915 was a seaside resort whose economy rested on summer visitors, hotels, and the Boardwalk, with rail lines carrying crowds from Philadelphia and New York. This panoramic photograph, titled for the Anti-Saloon League, appears to show a temperance gathering in that resort town, an awkward fit for a city whose hotels and restaurants depended partly on liquor sales. National prohibition was still several years off, but the temperance movement was gaining ground across the country, and the question of saloons and Sunday drinking was argued in city councils and state legislatures. For residents and visitors alike, Atlantic City was known as a place of pleasure, so a convention of dry reformers stood out against the usual resort crowds.
