In 1926 Atlantic City was still building its reputation as a national seaside destination, and the new Convention Hall was rising near the Boardwalk, planned to host conventions and large public gatherings. Summer crowds filled the rolling chairs that carried guests along the planks, while the Million Dollar Pier and Steel Pier offered band concerts and vaudeville acts. The pageant pictured here was staged for those visitors, with contestants parading before crowds on the sand and boards. Local people who worked in hotels, laundries, and boardwalk shops knew the summer season as a mix of hard labor and holiday spectacle.
