In 1897, Atlantic City, New Jersey, was a seaside resort of large hotels, and its summer trade still depended on visitors who came by rail from Philadelphia and other nearby cities. Its hotels had grown into multistory buildings with long verandas facing the ocean, and the boardwalk, by then well used, carried wheeled rolling chairs pulled by attendants along its length. Residents earned their living from hotel staff work, boarding houses, and the seasonal bathing trade, and the town's population swelled each summer far beyond its year-round count. The Absecon Lighthouse, standing a short distance inland from the beach, remained one of the few landmarks visible from the shore.
