Atlantic City was a seaside resort in 1925, drawing visitors by rail from Philadelphia and New York, and its boardwalk hotels, piers, and bathing beaches made tourism the town's main business. The pageant shown here grew out of the beauty contest the city began in 1921 to extend the summer season past Labor Day, and by the mid-1920s it had become a popular public spectacle on the Boardwalk. Prohibition was in force nationwide, yet hotels and cafes still served drinks to guests, and liquor reached the resort through quieter channels. Residents knew their town for the daily rhythm of crowds, ocean air, and boardwalk parades.
