Newark, New Jersey, in 1919 was one of the largest industrial cities in the Northeast, with factories making leather goods, jewelry, electrical equipment, and beer, and with the Prudential Insurance Company's headquarters a visible presence downtown. The city had grown quickly during the war years, when its plants ran full shifts on government orders. The 312th Infantry belonged to the 78th "Lightning" Division, which was organized at Camp Dix and drew many of its men from northern New Jersey and New York, so the regiment's members would have been familiar faces on Newark streets. Men of the regiment fought in the Meuse-Argonne offensive in the fall of 1918, and their return that year meant that Newark families were now reuniting with sons, husbands, and neighbors after a hard year overseas.
