Hackensack, the Bergen County seat in northern New Jersey, was in 1913 a market and government town that drew farmers, merchants, and lawyers to its courthouse square. Its Dutch and English colonial roots still shaped the streets and the river that runs past the town. Rail and trolley connections made it a practical place to live for people whose work lay across the Hudson in New York City, and the county's growing suburbs were beginning to fill with commuters. Across the northern part of the state that year, the labor unrest in the silk mills of nearby Paterson drew wide attention, a reminder that the region's economy depended on both farming and factory work.
