Dover, in Morris County, New Jersey, was a small industrial town in 1907, shaped by the iron trade that had given the region its character for much of the nineteenth century. By the early twentieth century, the local iron mines and forges had lost ground to richer ore fields elsewhere, and many residents worked in shops, factories, and the railroad yards tied to the Lackawanna line, which carried workers and goods through the valley. The Morris Canal, once a vital route for iron and coal, was nearing the end of its working life, a reminder of how quickly transport and industry were changing. In a community like this, a school house stood as a point of civic pride, a place where families expected their children to gain the schooling that industrial work increasingly demanded.
