Dover, New Jersey, in 1907 was a small industrial town in the hills of Morris County, shaped by the iron trade that had drawn settlers to the valley since the eighteenth century. By the early twentieth century the iron mines and forges that once defined the local economy had declined, and the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad, with its main line and repair shops, had become one of the area's most important sources of work. Trains carried coal, ore, and manufactured goods through the town, linking its residents to Newark and New York. Social life centered on churches, fraternal lodges, and the shops along the main streets. To the people who lived there, Dover was a railroad and manufacturing town rooted in the old iron country of northern New Jersey.
