Blackwell Street in Dover, New Jersey, was the main commercial thoroughbare of this Morris County town in 1907. Dover had grown up around iron, with mines and forges in the surrounding hills, but by the early 1900s the local iron trade was fading as cheaper ore from the Lake Superior region reached eastern furnaces. The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad's line through the town kept Dover tied to New York and to the coal and freight traffic moving across northern New Jersey, and it brought commuters, merchants, and shoppers to the stores lining the street. Residents of the period would have known Dover as a railroad and mining community in transition, with its downtown serving the surrounding farms and villages as much as its own factory workers.
