Wenonah, a small borough in Gloucester County, New Jersey, was laid out in the 1870s as a residential community south of Philadelphia, and by 1915 its rail connections made it a quiet place for families and schools with ties to the city. The academy on the ridge drew boys who lived in or near the borough, and its daily routine centered on military drill, with cadets forming ranks for the dress parade that this photograph records. In 1915 the country was still neutral in the war raging in Europe, but the preparedness debate was growing, and military schools like this one were drawing new attention as places where young men learned drill, discipline and the rudiments of service. The picture captures a moment when a rural-edged New Jersey town still measured its routines by the train schedule and the school calendar.
