In 1907, Harvard Medical School was building out its new campus on Longwood Avenue, on the edge of Boston near the Brookline line, after leaving its older quarters in the city. The move came as Boston was becoming the country's leading center for medical training and research, with teaching hospitals and laboratories clustered in the same neighborhoods. The surrounding region ran on textiles, shoes, machine shops, and the harbor trade, and the streetcar lines carried workers and students between the factories and the wealthier suburbs. Medical education was changing fast then, with stricter entrance standards and a growing emphasis on laboratory science, and the new buildings reflected that shift. To residents of Boston and Cambridge, the school was already a name tied to the city's reputation for learning.
