Magnolia, a seaside village on the Gloucester shore of Cape Ann, Massachusetts, was in 1907 best known as a summer resort for families who came from Boston and the inland mill towns. The surrounding city of Gloucester was a working fishing port, where schooners sailed for the Grand Banks and many men earned their living in the granite quarries and fish-processing wharves. Rail service along the North Shore brought day visitors and boarding guests to the hotels and cottages above the water, and many families returned season after season. Magnolia's appeal rested on sea air, bathing beaches and evenings on the verandas, and residents of the time would have seen it as a place where the summer season and the working harbor existed side by side.
