Adams, Massachusetts, in 1907 was still a town whose fortunes rose and fell with the cotton and woolen mills along the Hoosic River. Mill work set the rhythm of daily life, with shift whistles marking the day and many families living within walking distance of the factories. That autumn, the financial panic that began in October 1907 reached New England's manufacturers, tightening credit and slowing orders for mills that relied on bank loans to buy raw cotton. Residents also looked to Mount Greylock, the highest point in Massachusetts, which the state had set aside as a reservation in 1898 and which drew summer visitors to the Berkshires by rail.
