In 1904 North Adams sat in the narrow Hoosac Valley, where its mills and print works still set the rhythm of daily life for most families. The Arnold Print Works, a calico printing firm long established on the river, was among the town's major employers, and factory whistles marked the shifts of workers who lived in closely packed streets climbing the hillsides. North Adams had also become a center for art education, with the Massachusetts Normal Art School drawing students and teachers to its campus. Residents who looked up from the valley floor saw Hoosac Mountain and the Greylock range beyond, and many took pride in a town that combined heavy industry with an unexpectedly lively cultural life.
