In 1904 the Boston Public Garden was a well-tended park at the edge of the city's downtown, a short walk from Boston Common and the new Back Bay neighborhood that had been built on filled tidal flats. The garden had opened in 1837 as one of the first public botanical gardens in the country, and by the early 1900s it was a favorite place for Bostonians to stroll past flower beds and the lagoon. The city's economy then rested on shoe and textile manufacturing, shipping through its harbor, and a dense web of railroads, and the Tremont Street subway, opened in 1897 beneath the Common, had made getting downtown quicker. Swan boats had carried passengers across the lagoon since 1877, and residents knew the garden as a green refuge within the crowded, industrious city.
