Boston in 1894 was a city of roughly 450,000 people, crowded onto a peninsula and filled with the factories, wharves, and rail yards that powered New England's economy. Its shoe, textile, and machine industries drew workers from Ireland, Italy, Canada, and the Maritime provinces, and tenements packed the North End and the West End. The city's politics were dominated by Irish-American Democrats and Yankee Republicans, and the rivalry shaped everything from ward patronage to the public schools. The Back Bay, filled in during the decades after the Civil War, was still new enough that residents spoke of it as the city's showpiece, while the older districts looked north toward the crowded waterfront and the railroad terminals that connected Boston to the rest of the country.
