Boston in 1894 was the largest city in New England, with a population of roughly 450,000 by the 1890 census, and its economy rested on shipping, shoe and leather manufacturing, clothing, and wool and textile trades. The waterfront wharves along the harbor handled coastal and foreign cargo, while factories and railroad yards ran along the southern and western edges of the city. Electric streetcars were spreading across the city's neighborhoods, and the annexations of Roxbury, Dorchester, and Charlestown had brought the city's borders to their modern shape. The Great Boston Fire of 1872 was still remembered downtown, where new commercial buildings had replaced the burned blocks. Residents of the period knew Boston as a center of publishing, education, and Yankee civic pride, and its new Public Library building in Copley Square was then under construction.
