Boston's Back Bay, where the Massachusetts Institute of Technology then stood, was in 1903 a district of newly filled land, brick townhouses, and institutions crowded between the Charles River and the railroad lines. MIT, founded in 1861 by William Barton Rogers to train engineers and chemists for an industrializing country, had occupied its Boylston Street building since 1866 and was still years away from moving across the river to Cambridge in 1916. Its students and faculty worked close to Boston's mills, machine shops, and electric companies, and the city's growing manufacturing economy shaped what the school taught. That October, the first modern World Series was played at the Huntington Avenue Grounds a short walk from the campus, when the Boston Americans faced the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the games drew crowds that filled the neighborhood.
