Boston's Old City Hall on School Street, shown here in 1903, had served as the seat of city government since the mid-1860s, when the Gothic building replaced earlier offices. By then the city was a major port and manufacturing center, with shoe and leather works, textile and clothing shops, and wharves that handled coastal and foreign cargo. Boston had begun to modernize its streets: the Boston Elevated Railway had been formed in 1894, and the Tremont Street subway, opened in 1897, was among the first underground rapid transit lines in the country. That fall, the city's American League team met the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first modern World Series, and Boston won the best-of-nine contest five games to three. Residents of the period would have known the downtown district as the center of commerce, civic life, and the city's growing immigrant neighborhoods.
