Brookline, Massachusetts, in 1903 was a residential town of large estates and family houses on the western edge of Boston, where many residents commuted downtown by electric streetcar. Electric trolleys had replaced horse cars on the main routes during the 1890s, linking outlying neighborhoods to the city and drawing new families out from Boston. The Olmsted landscape firm, based at Fairsted in Brookline, had shaped the grounds of many of the town's properties, and residents took pride in that green, carefully planned character. The town also kept its old tradition of town meeting government and its public schools, which were a point of civic pride. This view of Brandon Hall belongs to that landscape of private grounds and substantial houses that defined the town in the early twentieth century.
