In 1903 the Colonial theater on Boylston Street stood among the leading playhouses in Boston, a city of more than half a million people that had long treated the theater as a serious part of its civic and social life. The house had opened only a few years earlier, around 1900, and it drew touring companies and out-of-town productions that often tried their shows in Boston before going on to New York. Theatergoers in the city's central district could reach it by the electric streetcars and the Tremont Street subway, which had opened in 1897 as one of the first underground transit lines in the United States. The neighborhood around Boylston and Tremont streets was then one of Boston's busiest commercial and entertainment districts, full of hotels, shops, and restaurants that catered to evening crowds.
