Boston in 1903 was a city whose most fashionable streets had moved onto the filled-in Back Bay. Commonwealth Avenue, with its tree-lined mall down the middle, drew merchant and professional families who built brick and brownstone houses along the avenue and Beacon Street. Shipping, textiles, leather, and shoemaking anchored the economy, and the Boston Elevated Railway carried workers between these neighborhoods and the downtown offices. That fall, the Boston Americans met the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first modern World Series, a best-of-nine contest Boston won, and the city's newspapers and streets filled with its fans.
