Fairfield and Boylston Streets sit in Boston's Back Bay, a district that had been created on reclaimed tidal flats over the preceding few decades. By 1903 its brownstone rows and wide avenues housed merchants, lawyers, and families who had moved out of the crowded South End. Boylston Street ran toward Copley Square, where Trinity Church and the Boston Public Library, opened in 1895, anchored the neighborhood's cultural life. The Boston Elevated Railway, formed in 1897, carried residents and shoppers along these streets on electric cars. That fall, the Boston Americans met the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first modern World Series, and the games drew crowds from across the city.
