Hotel Vendome stood at the corner of Commonwealth Avenue and Dartmouth Street in Boston's Back Bay in 1903, a neighborhood built on filled tidal flats over the preceding decades. The hotel had opened in 1871 and became one of the city's best-known addresses for travelers and well-off residents, close to the avenue's tree-lined mall and the fashionable brownstones nearby. Boston in 1903 was a major port and manufacturing city with a population approaching half a million, and its streetcar and rail network carried workers and visitors across its neighborhoods. That fall the Boston Americans played the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first modern World Series, and the city's sporting crowds followed the games closely. The Vendome itself was destroyed by fire in 1972.
