In 1903, Boston was a port city of roughly half a million people, and its economy still rested on shoe making, wool and textile trade, and shipping through the harbor. The Tremont Street subway, opened in 1897, had made the city a pioneer in underground transit, and streetcar lines were carrying workers and shoppers across neighborhoods that had been annexed in the decades after the Civil War. Downtown was still rebuilding its commercial core after the Great Boston Fire of 1872, and hotels like the Clarendon served business travelers and visitors arriving by rail. That October, the Boston Americans beat the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first modern World Series, giving the city a championship that residents talked about for months.
