In 1903 the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, still occupied its first home on Copley Square in the Back Bay, a district of filled land that the city had built out over the previous few decades. Boston was then a major port and a center of shoe, leather, textile, and printing trades, with a population approaching half a million, and its wealthier families often gave paintings and objects to the museum. The city's newer institutions were also taking shape nearby: Symphony Hall had opened in 1900, and the Boston Americans, who had moved into the Huntington Avenue Grounds, close to where the museum would build its new home, met the Pittsburgh Pirates that October in the first modern World Series. The museum's move to Huntington Avenue, completed in 1909, was still years away when this view was made.
