In 1903, the corner of Newbury and Dartmouth Streets in Boston's Back Bay was a fashionable address on land that had been filled from the tidal flats only a few decades earlier. Newbury Street had become a mix of shops, galleries, and residences serving the city's prosperous families, and the district sat close to Copley Square, where the new Boston Public Library building had opened in 1895. Boston was then a city of more than half a million people, with electric streetcars carrying workers and shoppers across its neighborhoods and its port and textile and shoe industries still driving much of the regional economy. That fall, the Boston Americans met the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first modern World Series, a contest that drew intense local attention from fans across the city.
