Boston's State House stood on Beacon Hill in 1903, looking over Boston Common and the downtown streets that ran toward the harbor. Charles Bulfinch designed the building in the 1790s, and its gilded dome was the city's most recognizable landmark. By 1903 Boston had about 560,000 residents, and the Boston Elevated Railway's electric streetcars carried workers and shoppers through the streets around the hill. Politics in the Commonwealth were run from this building, where the legislature met while the city's immigrant neighborhoods grew and its factories, shipping, and banks kept the local economy busy. That fall, the Boston Americans would win the first modern World Series, and the city would celebrate it in the same streets below the dome.
