Tremont Street, shown here in 1903, runs along the edge of Boston Common and was one of the busiest downtown corridors in the city. Boston had opened the Tremont Street subway in 1897, the first underground rapid transit line in the United States, so streetcars rumbled below while carriages and early automobiles crowded the surface. The city then held roughly half a million residents, many of them immigrants from Ireland, Italy, and Russia, and its economy rested on shoe manufacturing, printing, banking, and insurance. Hotels like the Parker House and churches such as Park Street Church drew visitors along these blocks. That fall, the Boston Americans would meet the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first modern World Series, and the city's streets would fill with fans.
