At the Hotel Vendome in 1903, Boston was a port and a center of the shoe, leather, and wool trades, with ships working the harbor and goods moving through its wholesale districts. Across the Back Bay, Symphony Hall on Huntington Avenue had opened in 1900 as a permanent home for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and many of the hotel's guests were the same well-dressed concertgoers who made evening trips to hear it. A short walk away, the Boston Public Library in Copley Square, completed in 1895, was a point of civic pride for residents who valued its reading rooms. City politics in this period was shaped by ward organizations, many led by Irish-American politicians who held considerable power in City Hall.
