Park Street Station in Boston sat at the corner of Park Street and Tremont Street, beside the Common, in 1903. Six years earlier, the Tremont Street Subway had opened there as the first underground rapid transit line in the United States, and the station was one of the busiest transfer points in a city of roughly half a million people. Streetcars from Cambridge, Roxbury, Dorchester, and the suburbs funneled through the downtown streets, and the new Boston Elevated Railway, formed in 1901, was then consolidating those lines under one company. Commuters, shoppers, and visitors heading to the Common and the State House crowded the platforms and sidewalks each day.
