Commonwealth Avenue in Boston, photographed in 1903, ran through the Back Bay, former tidal flats filled in during the later nineteenth century and laid out on a plan that borrowed from Parisian boulevards. Its broad central mall, shaded by rows of trees, was meant for strolling and was a point of civic pride among the merchant and professional families who built the stone houses along it. Electric streetcars of the Boston Elevated Railway, formed in 1897 to consolidate the city's transit lines, served the avenue by then, bringing commuters in from outlying districts where mills and shipping kept the city's economy running. That October, Boston's American League team would win the first modern World Series, a victory the city celebrated in its neighborhoods.
