In 1903 Commonwealth Avenue in Boston's Back Bay was one of the city's most fashionable residential streets, a broad tree-lined boulevard that had been laid out over filled tidal flats in the decades after the Civil War. Its tall brick and brownstone houses held the families of merchants, lawyers, and bankers who had made Boston a center of finance, shipping, and manufacturing in New England. Electric streetcars and the new Tremont Street subway, opened in 1897, carried workers and shoppers into the city from neighborhoods farther out, while the nearby Public Garden and Common drew strollers on fine afternoons. That fall, residents followed the first modern World Series, in which the Boston Americans defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the city's pride in its ballpark and its streets ran high.
