Boston in 1903 was a city still extending itself onto filled land, and Commonwealth Avenue near the Fenway showed how far that work had reached. Back Bay had been reclaimed from tidal flats over the preceding decades, and Frederick Law Olmsted's Back Bay Fens, part of the park chain later called the Emerald Necklace, was still taking shape along the edge of the new neighborhoods. The Boston Elevated Railway, formed in 1897, carried residents from the city core out along the avenues. Nearby, the Huntington Avenue Grounds served as home for the Boston Americans, and that October the ballpark hosted games of the first modern World Series, played against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
