Boston City Hospital, pictured here in 1903, stood on Harrison Avenue in the South End, a district of brick rowhouses and crowded tenements. It had opened in 1864 as the city's public hospital for people who could not pay private doctors, and by the early twentieth century it treated many of the factory hands, dockworkers, and recent immigrants who made up much of the city's labor force. Boston was then a major port and manufacturing center, and its population had grown steadily through decades of immigration from Ireland, Italy, and Eastern Europe. That autumn the city's attention also turned to the Boston Americans, who would win the first modern World Series that October.
