Boston Common in 1903 was the oldest public park in the United States, a green of roughly 50 acres lying between the downtown office blocks and the Beacon Hill houses above it. Electric streetcars had rolled past its edge since the Tremont Street subway opened in 1897, carrying workers from the mills and wharves of the outer wards toward the shops on Washington Street. Over the preceding decades the city had absorbed its neighbors Roxbury, Dorchester and Charlestown, pushing its population past half a million. That same fall the Boston Americans played Pittsburgh in the first modern World Series, a contest the city followed with keen local interest.
