Boston Common in 1910 lay directly below the State House on Beacon Hill, whose gilded dome rose above the trees and could be seen from the lawns and walks. The city's shoe factories, leather houses and clothing shops drew thousands of workers from Ireland, Italy and Eastern Europe, and many of their families settled in the West End and North End within walking distance of the park. On Sunday afternoons they filled the paths between the Central Burying Ground and the Frog Pond, where children waded in summer and skated in winter. Ward politicians also used the Common for rallies and ceremonies, courting the immigrant voters whose ballots counted in city elections.
