Copley Square in 1910 sat at the heart of the Back Bay, a district of filled land that had been built up from the tidal flats along the Charles River basin over the preceding decades. Trinity Church, finished in the 1870s to a design by H. H. Richardson, stood on the square beside the Boston Public Library, whose McKim, Mead & White building opened in 1895. The square took its name from the painter John Singleton Copley, and streetcars of the Boston Elevated Railway, formed in 1897 to consolidate city transit, ran past its edges. Boston then had roughly 670,000 residents, and its economy rested on banking, insurance, the wool and shoe trades, and the port, so the square's churches and library served a city that valued education and public institutions.
