Copley Square in 1910 was close to the city's cultural life. The Museum of Fine Arts had moved its collections to Huntington Avenue in 1909, a short walk southwest of the square, and Symphony Hall, opened there in 1900, drew concertgoers from across Boston. The city's politics that year centered on Mayor John F. Fitzgerald, whose campaigns rallied the Irish-American voters who had grown powerful in city hall. Residents would have known the square less as a monument than as the front door of a neighborhood still young by Boston standards.
