Charlestown, Massachusetts, in 1910 was a densely built waterfront district that had been annexed to Boston only a few decades earlier, in 1874, and it kept a distinct working-class identity. The Charlestown Navy Yard, founded in 1800 on the Mystic River, was among the largest employers in the area, and its shipyard and drydocks shaped the lives of many families who lived in the tight streets nearby. Irish immigrants and their children made up a large part of the population, and parish churches, saloons, and ward politics anchored neighborhood life. Bunker Hill, where the Battle of Bunker Hill was fought in 1775, rose above the rooftops, and the granite monument on its summit was already a point of local pride. Residents in 1910 would have known the district first for its navy yard, its hill, and its position at the edge of the Boston harbor trade.
