In 1896 Boston was the wholesale center for much of New England's leather, wool, and footwear trade, and merchants in the financial district near Summer and Congress streets set the prices that mills across the region followed. The city's chamber of commerce gave these businessmen a common voice in debates over tariffs, freight rates, and the expansion of the port. Much of the city's newest ground lay in the Back Bay, where filled marshland had been laid out in streets and brownstone blocks since the 1860s and was still filling in with office buildings and churches. A view of the Boston business community from the Montreal firm of Notman Photo Co. shows the men who ran these enterprises at the height of the Gilded Age.
