Boston, Massachusetts, in 1896 was New England's commercial center and one of the country's major ports, with wharves handling coastal shipping and goods moving to and from the region's mills and merchants. The city had passed 400,000 residents by the 1890s, many of them Irish and Italian immigrants, and its business leaders organized through groups like the Chamber of Commerce to press for harbor improvements, rail connections, and favorable trade policies. Much of the city's commercial life centered on the downtown offices along State and Water streets, where merchants, insurance men, and brokers did their business. This photograph ties that business community to a city on the verge of change, since construction on America's first subway had begun in Boston in 1895 and would open in 1897.
