Boston in 1904 was a city of shoe and leather factories, busy harbor docks, and crowded streetcar lines, and its American League ballclub had become one of its best-known institutions. The Boston Americans had won the first modern World Series the previous autumn, defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates five games to three, and fans packed the Huntington Avenue Grounds to follow the club. Pitcher Cy Young was near the height of his career, and his perfect game against Philadelphia that May was still fresh in local conversation.
